How online slots work

For adults in Ontario (19+) and Alberta (18+) only. Gambling can be harmful. Get help.

Three numbers tell you most of what you need to know about a slot: RTP, volatility and top win. Here is what each one means, and what none of them can do.

Every spin is random

Licensed slots use a certified random number generator. Each spin is independent of the last one. A machine is never “due”, and nothing you do with timing or stake size changes the odds.

RTP: the long-run average

Return to player is the share of all money staked that a game pays back over millions of spins. A 96% RTP slot keeps about 4% on average. Over one evening, your result can be far above or below that. Studios ship several RTP settings and casinos pick one, so the same game can pay back less at one site than another. The game’s info screen shows the version in front of you.

Volatility: how wins are spread out

Low-volatility games pay small amounts often. Very high-volatility games can go a long time without a meaningful win, then pay a lot at once. Neither is better. Higher volatility simply means bigger swings in your balance.

Top win

The maximum a single spin or bonus can pay, as a multiple of your stake. A 5,000x top win on a $1 spin is $5,000. It is a rare outcome, not a target.

Which slots have the best odds?

For the same stake, a higher RTP setting returns more on average. Of the slots we cover, Big Bass Bonanza has the highest top setting at 96.71%. Always check the version your casino runs.

Bonus features in plain words

  • Tumbles or cascades: winning symbols vanish and new ones fall, so one spin can win several times.
  • Free spins: a bonus round, usually triggered by scatter symbols, that often adds multipliers or special wilds.
  • Cluster or scatter pays: symbols win when grouped or anywhere on the grid, instead of along paylines.

Set a limit before you play. Every licensed casino in Ontario and Alberta lets you set deposit and time limits in your account. Slots are entertainment with a house edge, not a way to make money.
